Shilajit exudes from rocks during hot weather periods in the lower Himalayas, Vindhya and other mountainous regions of Nepal where iron is abundant. It flows naturally from fissures in the rocks or is formed as tar from the natural decomposition of plant matter in the soil.

Shilajit consists of a compact mass of plant organic matter and has a bitter flavour. The black variety is most commonly used after it has been purified through complex processes.

Shilajit consists of 60-80% organic matter, 20-40% mineral components and contains around 5% trace elements. It contains over 85 natural ionic minerals as well as fulvic acid*, humic acid and valuable secondary plant substances.

The Sanskrit word "Shilajit" also means "conqueror of mountains" and "destroyer of weakness".
Shilajit is also known as "Mumijo".

The Indian Ayurveda master Charaka, author of the "Charaka Samhita", praised Shilajit in the highest terms. The ancient Ayurvedic texts describe his statement that Shilajit can make the body as hard as stone and that there is no imbalance that cannot be balanced with Shilajit.
