The highly demanded nutmeg and mace flowers until the late Medieval came only through Arabian traders to Europe. With the discovery of the sea passage to India, nutmeg - actually a seed - became one of the most popular trading goods of the Portuguese and later the Dutch.
Nutmeg was highly valued as a panacea and strengthening tonic. Many drinks - including beer or the popular spiced wines - were enriched with nutmeg. Today nutmeg is used as a regular kitchen herb, for example for grain- or potato-dishes.
