The small Kutaja tree (botanical name: Holarrhena antidysenterica) is mainly found in mountain regions. Both the bark and the flowers, fruits and seeds are used in Ayurvedic recipes. Kutaja balances Kapha and Pitta while increasing Vata.

According to the Ayurvedic source text Charak Samhita, Kutaja belongs to Arshoghna, Kandughna, Stanyasodhana and Asthapanopaga. It is also called Kurchi or Kutaz. The taste (Rasa) is astringent and bitter. The property (Guna) dry. Kutaja promotes the digestive fire (Agni).

The ancient Hindu text Manusmriti says that kutaja seeds can be used to purify water, similar to moringa, whose ground seeds are also put into water to purify it. The powder of one ground seed is enough to purify one litre of water.

  • Dosha: Vata increasing, Pitta and Kapha balancing
  • Rasa: bitter, astringent
  • Guna: light, harsh
  • Vipaka: spicy
  • Virya: cold
  • Highly pure, laboratory-tested quality*
