Guggul is the gum-like resin of Indian myrrh (botanical name: Commiphora mukul). Already in ancient Rome Guggul was known and appreciated and was imported from India. The Guggul resin is traditionally obtained by cutting the trunk of the balsam or myrrh tree. Its Indian name "Guggulu" means "that which preserves from diseases".
The Ayurveda appreciates the resin with its bitter, sharp, sweet and astringent taste as Rasayana, which can reduce and balance all three doshas. Guggul is particularly recommended for imbalances of the Vata and Kapha Doshas.
